Your window to the wild.
A nature exploration concept combining location-based discovery, species identification, and game-like progression while encouraging people to put their phones away and pay attention to the world around them.
Potoo is a mobile nature companion designed to make outdoor exploration more accessible and engaging. It combines location-based exploration, nature identification, and game-like progression without making the phone the center of the experience.
Before going outside, users can learn about species they are likely to encounter. While exploring, they are encouraged to put their phones away, observe their surroundings, and return afterward to record what they remember seeing or hearing.
Instead of immediately revealing an identification, Potoo can provide clues about appearance, habitat, behavior, season, and calls. Users make their own identification before receiving feedback and learning more about the species.
Make outdoor exploration more engaging while keeping technology as unobtrusive as possible.
Technology should support the nature experience rather than replace it.
Discover nearby nature hotspots and species relevant to the surrounding area.
Identify unfamiliar species, log observations, and build a personal nature encyclopedia.
Encourage attention to seasonal changes, migrations, and other real-world activity.
Locations where users can view recent data, test their knowledge, and participate in nature-focused activities.
Check which species might be encountered and learn what to look and listen for.
Put the phone away and actively look and listen for species.
Return to Potoo and record what you remember seeing or hearing.
Work through questions and clues before receiving the identification.
Learn more about the species and add it to the personal encyclopedia.
Develop naturalist skills and progress through discoveries and research stations.
Potoo is especially suited to mobile development because its experience depends on location, observation, photography, identification, and interactions that happen while users are outside.
A React Native implementation provides a path toward an iOS and Android interface while connecting the project to mobile-development concepts such as components, state, functional programming, stylesheets, and responsive mobile UI.
Potoo also connects naturally to game development. Its collection system, progression, identification challenges, research stations, and exploration mechanics can be represented as interactive game systems.
Godot provides a way to prototype these systems while exploring transferable skills including object-oriented programming, modularity, state management, event-driven programming, debugging, and software architecture.
This makes Potoo an example of how game design techniques can be applied outside a conventional game: progression and feedback can encourage learning and exploration without turning the outdoor experience into a screen-based game.
Potoo sits at the intersection of software development, game design, emerging media, and natural history. The project uses technology to connect these areas rather than treating them as separate disciplines.
The challenge is not simply building an identification app. It is designing technology that knows when to get out of the way. Potoo's most important interaction may ultimately be the moment when the user closes the app, looks into the trees, and starts paying attention.
Potoo is an evolving project concept and prototype direction. Future development can explore how the same core experience can be expressed through a mobile React Native application and interactive Godot prototypes.
The long-term goal is to combine nature information, identification challenges, location-based discovery, and game-inspired progression into an experience that helps people become better observers of the world around them.
